Justin Verlander reeled off a total of 11 strikeouts as the Cincinnati Reds
beat the Chicago (NL) Cubs by a score of 5 to 0.
Verlander(15-6) was simply too much for the Chicago (NL) batters. He allowed
just 2 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. Overall Cincinnati out-hit Chicago (NL)
9 to 2.
Michael Wacha(10-10) was given the loss. Cincinnati knocked him around a bit,
as he gave up 5 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings. Verlander was pleased with his
performance. He noted, 'I had good command of all my pitches. Just as
important, my location was right on.'

Marcus Semien had 4 hits and 3 RBI at PNC Park where the powerful Atlanta
Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 9 to 8.
Semien had a big day with his bat. He lifted one out of the park for a two
run home run in the 1st inning, lined a single in the 2nd inning, doubled in
the 4th inning and slapped a base-hit which plated a run in the 5th inning.
Pittsburgh made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.
Michael Pineda(10-11) allowed 6 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Jerry Blevins gained credit for his 1st save. Zack Greinke(14-11)
took the loss.
'We lose our concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game.' Pittsburgh's
manager said after the game. 'Maybe now these guys will listen when I say
they have to concentrate on EVERY pitch.'

Felix Pena delivered 5 solid innings as the New York (AL) Yankees defeated the

outs Andrew McCutchen got things rolling when he doubled. Joc Pederson
stepped up next and he smashed a two-run homer. That early run support was
enough for Pena(8-7) and New York (AL). Neither team managed to score after
the 3rd inning.
Pena got help from Giovanny Gallegos who earned his 20th save. The loss was
charged to David Hess(8-14). He pitched 5 innings allowing 4 hits and 1
walk.

on strikeouts as the potent Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Tampa Bay Rays by

Manaea(1-2) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Tampa Bay offense. He
didn't give up much, just 2 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings improving his ERA
from 4.30 to 3.18. Toronto finished with 8 hits while Tampa Bay ended up
with 2.
Roberto Osuna recorded the save, his 22nd. Noah Syndergaard(15-7) was the
losing pitcher. He gave up 3 runs and 6 hits in 5 and 1/3 innings.
Tampa Bay's manager was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but
did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start
calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.'

Velasquez(6-7) finally bested his Detroit opposite, Tyler Alexander(1-6), by

Alexander gave up the game's only run when Boston scored in the 5th inning.
Detroit tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.
Velasquez got help from Matt Barnes who was credited with his 11th save. With
this win, Boston has a 57-84 record. They have been 5-5 lately. Detroit's
manager was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering along
lately, something like 1-9 in the last week or two. That won't get it done.'

innings. Kevin Gausman(3-7) was the losing pitcher. He allowed New York (NL)
5 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings of work.

runs. John Means(14-12) absorbed the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing

'He was really impressive tonight,' Means said of his counterpart. 'Our guys

Sox topped the Minnesota Twins by the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1.
Chicago (AL) erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 8th inning
with 2 runs on 4 base hits. Tim Anderson opened up the inning nicely when he
stroked a single. Anderson then stole second base. Marwin Gonzalez then
stroked a one-base hit scoring a single run. Cesar Hernandez came up and he
slapped a base-hit. Delino Deshields was next to bat, but he was a strikeout
victim. Jose Ramirez added his contribution to the rally and stroked a
base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. The game was a scoreless duel
until the 8th inning.
The victory was credited to Taylor Rogers(5-5) who went 2 and 1/3 innings,
allowing 1 run. The losing pitcher was Jake Junis(11-9). He was stingy with
the baserunners, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.

his no-hit bid when Rougned Odor singled with one out in the 6th inning. The
pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score
again.
Hector Neris was credited with his 20th save. Madison Bumgarner(12-17)
absorbed the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and 3 walks in 8
