The San Diego Padres nipped the Pittsburgh Pirates 3 to 2 at PNC Park in a
hard fought contest.
San Diego scored all of the necessary runs in the 8th inning scoring 3 runs.
After an out was recorded, Derek Dietrich kicked off the action when he drew
a walk. Starling Marte followed next and he was hit by a pitch. After
another out, Justin Turner then belted a three-run homer. The game was a
scoreless duel until the 8th inning.
Chase Anderson(11-5) got the win allowing no runs in 7 innings. Jake Diekman
was credited with his 14th save. Zack Greinke(9-8) took the loss. He
pitched 8 innings allowing only 4 hits and 2 walks.
San Diego continued their winnings ways improving their record to 57-46. They
are 8-2 in their last ten games. With the loss Pittsburgh now has a record
of 61-41.

Justin Verlander struck out 12 batters as the Cincinnati Reds beat the
struggling New York (NL) Mets by a score of 4 to 2.
Verlander(12-4) pitched a solid game. He didn't allow much, just 4 hits and 1
walk in 8 innings. Cincinnati finished with just 5 hits in the victory.
Felipe Vazquez preserved the game for Verlander, recording his his 14th save.
Andrew Cashner(5-13) was the loser. Verlander was pleased with his
performance. He noted, 'I had good zip on my pitches. Just as important, my
location was right on. The fans really got into the game too - that always
helps me. Now, if I can only do that again in my next outing.'

30,614 fans were treated to a fine game at Yankee Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The New York (AL) Yankees won by the
slimmest of margins, 2 to 1.
Jonathan Holder(1-2) did a nice job in relief and was credited with the win.
He was reached for no hits and 1 walk in 1 and 1/3 innings. New York (AL)
banged out 8 hits on the afternoon.
Holder got help from Richard Bleier who earned his 5th save. Austin Voth(2-3)
was the losing pitcher in relief. New York (AL) now has a record of 42-60.
With the loss, Los Angeles(AL) has a record of 6-4 lately, 56-47 overall.

In an entertaining game at Citizens Bank Park the final score was the
Washington Nationals 10, the Philadelphia Phillies 7.
Logan Forsythe provided the offensive punch. He slapped a single in the 1st
inning, lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 5th inning and delivered a
one-base hit which plated a run in the 7th inning. The game was a wild
affair with the lead changing hands 5 times.
The victory went to Josh Hader(2-5) who went 2/3 of an inning, allowing no
runs. Wilmer Font(0-2) absorbed the loss. Washington scored big getting 6
runs off him in 5 innings.
Hunter Renfroe ripped 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI but it wasn't enough for
Philadelphia.

Mike Soroka mowed down 10 Miami batters as the Colorado Rockies clobbered the
outmatched Miami Marlins, 10 to 0.
Soroka(11-2) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He allowed just 5 hits
and 3 walks in 8 innings. Colorado had 12 hits for the game and Miami had 5.
Domingo German(6-8) suffered the loss. Colorado knocked him around a bit, as
he gave up 6 runs in 4 innings. Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of
Soroka - except Miami. Miami's manager lamented, 'He just was 'on' this
afternoon. He was keeping our guys off balance all game. A fine game by a
good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun game for the hometown fans -
unfortunately we were the visitors!'

Pat Valaika hit 2 doubles and had 3 RBI at Globe Life Park as the Houston
Astros came back dramatically to top the hapless Texas Rangers by the score
of 6 to 3.
Houston came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning when they tallied 4
runs on 3 hits. The big moment was provided by Valaika who deflated the
spirits of the home town crowd when he doubled clearing the bases. Houston
out-hit Texas for the game, 12 hits to 6.
Framber Valdez(3-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing
1 run. Josh James recorded his 14th save. Roenis Elias(1-6) was tagged with
the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning allowing 3 hits and 2 walks.
'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Valaika said. 'If you
just keep trying good things can happen!'

the Chicago (AL) White Sox won in their last at-bat beating the Minnesota

Chicago (AL) scored the winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning plating 2
runs utilizing 2 base hits. Omar Narvaez opened up the inning nicely when he
lined a base-hit. Marwin Gonzalez got his turn next, but he was a strikeout
victim. A balk was called. D.J. Stewart was up next and he blasted a
two-run home run giving Chicago (AL) the win as 26,859 happy fans joyfully
celebrated. Chicago (AL) ended up with 13 hits for the game while Minnesota
had 8.
Taylor Rogers(3-2) allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning, and picked up the
victory. The losing pitcher was Carlos Estevez(2-3) in relief. The Chicago
(AL) ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 55-47. Minnesota has
a record of 53-52 after the loss.

Oscar Mercado had 4 hits as the sizzling St. Louis Cardinals bested the

inning. The highlight belonged to Mercado who made the crowd happy when he

Harold Castro touched them all as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Cleveland
Indians 7 to 5 at Comerica Park.
Cleveland found themselves trailing quickly as the Detroit bats came through
in the first inning as they scored 3 runs on 3 base hits. The highlight
belonged to Randal Grichuk who came through for the home fans when he smashed
a two-run homer. Cleveland threatened in the 9th but their rally came up
short.
Daniel Ponce De Leon(2-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 5 innings.
