One run was the difference at Citizens Bank Park as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the San Diego Padres 5 to 4.
Philadelphia scored 4 runs in the 6th inning when they came up with 4 base
hits. The biggest moment was provided by Yandy Diaz who electrified Citizens
Bank Park when he doubled bringing in two baserunners. San Diego tried
unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.
Ryan Pressly(4-2) got the win allowing no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. Brad Hand
preserved the game for Pressly, recording his his 14th save. Chase
Anderson(7-5) absorbed the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 5 hits in 5 and 1/3
innings.
'Some losses are harder to take than others' San Diego's manager lamented
after the game. 'This was one of them.'

Mike Moustakas cracked a homer and had 2 RBI and Griffin Canning didn't allow
a hit until the 7th inning as the Los Angeles(AL) Angels beat the Tampa Bay
Rays by a score of 6 to 2.
Canning(6-1) was solid in the win. He didn't give up much, just 1 hit and 2
walks in 7 innings. Canning struckout 10 Tampa Bay batters. The
right-handed Canning lost his chance for a no-hitter when Rhys Hoskins
homered with one out in the 7th inning. Los Angeles(AL) ended up with 9 hits
for the game while Tampa Bay had 2.
Zack Britton gained credit for his 12th save. Blake Snell(5-5) took the loss.
He allowed 6 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. Canning, when asked
about his 10 strikeout performance noted, 'The important thing is that we
won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the
other hand, since we won it feels great!'

New York (NL) came up with 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning when they
had 3 base hits. They ended up being the winning runs. After the 4th
inning, neither team was able to score.
Cashner got help from Robert Gsellman who earned his 2nd save.

Jorge Alfaro smacked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Devin Smeltzer closed the

Alfaro had a big day at the plate. He belted a three-run homer in the 4th
inning and clubbed a solo home run in the 7th inning. Detroit threatened in
the 9th but Minnesota was able to put down the rally.
German Marquez(10-5) picked up the victory, allowing 8 runs in 7 and 1/3
innings. Smeltzer recorded the save, his 1st. Jeff Samardzija(5-9) was given
the loss. He allowed Minnesota 6 runs in 3 innings of work.
'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Detroit's manager said. 'We
did what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?'

inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 3rd inning, ripped a
single scoring a run in the 5th inning and stroked a one-base hit in the 6th
inning. Even though they scored in 5 different innings, Chicago (NL) was not
able to pull off the win.
Brad Keller(5-11) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 6 runs for the win. Bryan
Shaw(3-2) was charged with the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings
allowing 6 hits and 1 walk.

Boyd(11-5) was on top of his game. He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and 1
walk in 8 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.38 to 4.08. Toronto had 11 hits
for the game and Chicago (AL) had 3.
Jon Gray(8-6) suffered the loss. He allowed 2 runs and 7 hits in 5 and 2/3
innings. Chicago (AL)'s manager was upset after the game. 'I don't like to
complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they
ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule
book.'

At Busch Stadium the St. Louis Cardinals easily handled the hapless Washington
Nationals by the score of 5 to 1.
St. Louis scored 2 runs in the decisive bottom of the 2nd inning. That early
scoring was all that Hyun-Jin Ryu(8-4) needed. St. Louis had 9 hits overall,
while Washington had 6.
Ryu got relief help from Brandon Workman who gained credit for his 21st save.
The loss was charged to Reynaldo Lopez(3-10). He surrendered 3 runs and 5
hits in 5 innings.

The game was won by Cincinnati with a run in the 9th inning. Jonathan Villar
lofted a solo-blast 'downtown'. Cincinnati won despite being out-hit by Los
Angeles(NL) 10 hits to 7.
Liam Hendriks(5-6) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Hendriks
got help from Felipe Vazquez who was credited with his 12th save. The losing
pitcher was Fernando Rodney(2-4) in relief. He gave up 2 hits and 2 walks in
1 and 1/3 innings.

Kyle Gibson racked up an impressive total of 10 strikeouts as the Houston
Astros bested the Cleveland Indians 7 to 2 at Progressive Field.
Gibson(5-8) pitched a fine game. He went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 hits
and 1 walk reducing his ERA from 4.97 to 4.74. Overall Houston out-hit
Cleveland 13 to 7.
Gibson got help from Sean Newcomb who earned his 2nd save. Clay Buchholz(0-1)
was charged with the loss. He gave up 7 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.
'I had my good stuff today.' Gibson said. 'As the game went along I started to
get the feeling that I was going to strike out a bunch of hitters.'

The Oakland Athletics had an easy time of it at RingCentral Coliseum defeating
the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 11 to 6.
Mitch Garver helped send the fans home happy. He blasted a two-run home run
in the 1st inning, laced a one-base hit in the 3rd inning and slapped a
base-hit which plated a run in the 4th inning. Oakland had 17 hits for the
night while Baltimore had 14.
Ian Kennedy(3-2) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Yusei
Kikuchi(4-6) was given the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 3 and
2/3 innings of work.
