Zach Eflin went 8 solid innings as the San Francisco Giants bested the San
Diego Padres 1 to 0 at AT&T Park.
Eflin(6-5) simply dominated San Diego. He gave up just 3 hits and no walks in
8 innings lowering his ERA to 3.47. San Diego threatened in the 9th but
their rally came up short.
Hunter Strickland was credited with his 2nd save. Matt Andriese(3-2) was the
losing pitcher in relief. Despite losing San Diego's manager was optimistic
after the game. 'We'll get over this one. Sometimes the breaks fall your
way, sometimes they don't. Any one of a dozen little things go different,
and we come out on top.'

Pete Alonso smacked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Nationals Park where the New
York (NL) Mets beat the hapless Washington Nationals by the score of 12 to
9.
Alonso was in a groove all evening. The Washington fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box. He hit a bases-empty home run in the 1st
inning and lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 6th inning. Due to a poorly
pitched ballgame, scoring in 5 different innings was still not enough for
Washington to come away with the victory.
The victory was credited to Andrew Cashner(3-7) who went 6 innings, allowing 7
runs. Francisco Liriano recorded his 2nd save. The loss was charged to Lucas
Giolito(4-5). He allowed New York (NL) 6 runs in 2 innings of work.

Right fielder Eddie Rosario lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI as
the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in 11 innings by a
score of 6 to 3 at PNC Park.
The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. St. Louis won it in the 11th
inning. Kolten Wong led off and started the rally when he tripled. Luke
Voit came next and he drew a walk. Eduardo Escobar then drew a walk to load
the bases. Tommy Pham followed and he banged out a single plating a run.
Clay Holmes then had one get away for a wild pitch plating one more runner.
Rosario kept the inning going and ripped a one-base hit scoring the final run
of the inning. St. Louis finished with 8 hits in the victory.
The win went to Adam Ottavino(1-2) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Brandon
Workman got the save, his 15th. Jeurys Familia(0-1) was given the loss in
relief.

Chicago (NL) batters. He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and 1 walk in 8
innings improving his ERA from 4.18 to 3.80. Cincinnati had only 6 hits for
the game.
Mike Fiers(3-5) was charged with the loss. Cincinnati knocked him around a
bit, as he gave up 4 runs in 2 innings. Chicago (NL)'s manager was upset
after the game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires
strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone
the way it's printed in the rule book.'
